Take Action

Thank you for your interest in helping us to restore basic consumer protections to the driving for hire industry.

There are few ways to make your opinion known to the Mayor and your Council member:

– Post on their Facebook pages
– Email
– Phone call
– Submit questions to debates

Please be respectful in your comments.

Complete contact information for the Mayor and Council members is listed below.

Here’s a comment you can copy and paste into Facebook and email, or read on the phone:

I am a voter in Honolulu, I rely on taxi service to get around, and I worry that soon there won’t be taxis left to call. Already TheCab hardly answers the phone. Charley’s Taxi is the only taxi I can still rely on, but even with them the waits can get long.

Taxi drivers deserve to be treated equally for the essential service they provide. That means having the same freedom to set rates as Uber and Lyft have.

I don’t want to use Uber and Lyft. They often charge 3-5 times what it should cost to ride. The Council has continued to allow Uber and Lyft to price gouge Honolulu residents and visitors with surge pricing that results in a $672.49 charge for a 55-minute ride of 26 miles. Or how about $172.49 to go from Waikiki to the Airport?

I also don’t feel safe with them because drivers can use alias names to pass the background check. Without fingerprinting, how can we trust that a driver has not committed a violent crime or has a history of driving under the influence?

Their drivers don’t have to undergo a medical examination with lab tests before driving. Only after an “incident” is a medical check required. That’s too late. Without medical certification, how can we know that a driver is able to perform the duties expected of a for-hire driver?

As a voter, I am asking you to level the playing field: allow taxis to set their own rates. And please restore the basic consumer safety protections that were in place for decades.
