The Tagami & Powell Gallery and Gardens at Kahaluu is located at 47-754 Lamaula Road. 239-8146. This one-acre Hawaiian country estate was developed by Hiroshi Tagami, Hawai’i's foremost painter of scenic places. Other artists are also featured. Don’t miss the collection of fine Hawaiian Wood bowls and other sculptures, carvings, jewelry.

Nohea Gallery at Ward Warehouse has a well-rounded selection of all types of paintings, glass, ceramics, wood, furniture and artwork, many of which are made in Hawaii.

The Gift Shop at the Academy of Arts offers an array of Asian and Hawaiian art. Starting in early December, the Academy’s World of Art Bazaar is free to the public and offers a wide selection of Christmas ornaments from all over the world. There is no better place to find outstanding collectibles.

At The Contemporary Museum, which was formerly a private residence, you can experience “high living” in the islands. In addition to a panoramic view of the city of Honolulu, this quiet and elegant place boasts a considerable contemporary art collection.

The Gift Shop at the Queen Emma Summer Palace and the Old Mission Houses offer a wide selection of books and Hawaiian arts. The Old Mission Houses are across the street from the Kawaiahao Church, called the Westminster Abbey of the Pacific and a popular place for weddings. Sunday services are in Hawaiian and English and are open to the public. Wonderful choir.

Craft Fairs and Flower Shows, too many to count, are going on all year round. The Pacific Handcrafters Guild is usually at Thomas Square, Ala Moana Park. The annual Christmas Tree Festival, sponsored by the Queen’s Hospital Auxiliary in early December, provides an array of handmade Hawaiian and Christmas items.

Hula Supply Center is the place to get hula supplies and Hawaiian made items that you can also use for party decorations. Open 6 days a week, Mon-Sat. 941-5379

Kamaka ´Ukuleles, 531-3165, 550 South St. M-F, 8am to 4 p.m. You can buy Factory Seconds at the Kamaka factory manufacturer’s showroom for 10% below suggested list prices. Nothing is wrong with the structure or sound of the ´ukuleles classified as Factory Seconds; these just have a minor cosmetic flaw such as a nick, scratch or knot in the wood. Seconds are sold on first come, first served basis, no wait lists. Cost of “firsts” at a music store may be higher than the suggested list price.
