The standard points on the compass are not commonly used on O´ahu. Several local terms refer to the following relative directions:
Diamond Head – toward Diamond Head
Makai – toward the sea
Mauka - toward the mountains
Ewa - toward Ewa (pronounced ‘eh-vuh’), opposite Diamond Head past the airport on Leeward side
Windward refers to the east-facing side of the island (which is generally exposed to the trade winds), while Leeward denotes the westward side.
