Licensing Procedure
The licensing procedure takes about 2 to 3 weeks, depending on your determination to go through the process quickly.
- Bring us a current traffic abstract to show you are a good and safe driver.
- The “security clearance” takes longest, as the Department of Motor Vehicles will do a background check to find out whether your history poses a threat to the safety of passengers.
- The PUC doctor’s exam is a simple physical exam to ascertain that you have no impairments that make you a dangerous driver and to ensure that you are in good health (TB test).
- If you are an immigrant non-US citizen, bring a valid immigration authorization card.
- The written exam pertains to your understanding of the Taxicab Ordinance.
- The oral exam is to test your knowledge as to the locations of and driving routes to common places that passengers frequent: hospitals, government buildings, major attractions. Going to each of these places helps you to pass the oral exam (you are given 30 minutes maximum to pass the oral exam.)
Getting Started
We recommend that you initially rent a taxicab from any of our fleet owners and the cost of the car depends on the type, model and age of the vehicle. Once you find out that you are suited for this type of work, go and put on your own car. Ask us for the contacts at auto dealers so you can get a fleet discounted price. We will supply you with the Taxicab Licensing Procedure, on request.
Testimonial
“Sam” came to Charley’s Taxi less than two years ago. He had been driving more than five years at another cab company, barely earning a living. He noticed Charley’s drivers are always busy and thought about moving to Charley’s. But, when he asked Charley’s drivers, they told him, “it’s hard, many rules”. His friend recruited him to join and he found out why other Charley’s Taxi drivers tried to discourage him – he found out that there are so many different ways to make money in Charley’s. Sam thinks that Charley’s rules are good because they create harmony and discourage dissension among the drivers. He plans on working in Charley’s until he retires. After that, when he can no longer drive himself around, he plans to ride Charley’s because the drivers are kind to customers.
